Perplexity, or aporia, is an epistemological state in which something is known “about,” but the knowledge held is known to be insufficient to resolve into insight. Crucially, there is knowledge that the knowledge is insufficient.

This allows inquiry to proceed, as there is a target: I can know more about this.
